Strong quads protect against arthritis
20 February 2009

Dear Health Conscious Friend,

Strong Quads Protects Against Arthritis

During any one year period, 25% of people aged 55+ experience persistent knee pain, of whom approximately 1 in 6 in the UK and the Netherlands consult their general practitioner about it in the same time period. So, your chances of experiencing knee troubles at some time in your life are fairly high.

But, there is some good news. A new study conducted by the Mayo Clinic has confirmed that people with arthritis of the knee joint will have less pain and better physical function if they have strong thigh muscles. In fact the study also concluded that "strong quadriceps muscles are, overall, good for the knees," according to Dr. Shreyasee Amin, the lead researcher on the study.

Amin and her team followed 265 people with arthritis of the knee for 30 months, testing their quadriceps strength and assessing cartilage loss with MRI scans, both at the beginning of the study and again at 15 and 30 months.

Individuals with greater quadriceps strength at the beginning of the study seemed to protect themselves against loss of cartilage behind the kneecap, with individuals in the top third for quadriceps strength at 60 percent lower risk of losing cartilage. Study participants with stronger quadriceps also had better physical function and less knee pain. So, whether you have knee troubles now or would just like to take some preventative measures, you might want to consider strengthening those legs.

Reduce Your Stroke Risk By 22%

A Canadian study with 83,000 subjects that took place over a five year period confirms that better adherence to blood pressure-lowering therapy is associated with a reduced risk of disease of the blood vessels and specifically, the arteries that supply the brain.

In a report in the journal, ‘Stroke’, Dr. Sylvie Perreault of McGill University, Montreal, and her colleagues note that the benefits of blood pressure-lowering, or "antihypertensive," therapy on major cardiovascular outcomes have been demonstrated in clinical trials.

Unfortunately, about half of patients with hypertension (high blood pressure) did not stick to their prescribed therapy. However, for those that did, they had a 22% reduced risk of a stroke.

Besides taking prescription medications, other natural things you can do to lower blood pressure are:

  • Lower salt intake

  • Meditate

  • Consume 3,500 mg of potassium a day from foods such as yoghurt, cantaloupe, spinach and bananas. These can rid the body of too much sodium by acting as a diuretic.

  • Increase aerobic physical activity

So, if you have high blood pressure you probably want to make sure that you’re practising the proper therapy to keep it under control.

Use This To Achieve Your Health Goals

Dr. Gertraud Stadler and her colleagues from Columbia University in New York City concluded after an in-depth study that using a technique called Implementation Intentions can enable people to drastically improve their follow through of stated objectives.

In Implementation Intentions, a person puts their plans into "if-then" formats to help them make specific plans for achieving their goals and overcoming obstacles. For example, they might say, "If the weather's nice tomorrow then I will go for a run," or "If I sleep in, I won't watch the morning news so I'll still have time to exercise."

In this study involving 256 middle-aged women, Stadler and her team found that the women who used this technique were much more likely to follow through with their intentions to be more active than "control" women who received information only.

If one of your challenges to getting into shape is acting on it, or the ‘follow through’, then this technique might be just what the doctor ordered.
