Dear Health Conscious Friend,
Good news for those of you who like your coffee; a new study done in Japan by Dr. Toru Naganuma and his colleagues from Tohoku University, Sendai showed that drinking coffee regularly could reduce the risk of cancers of the mouth, pharynx, and oesophagus.
Coffee May Protect Against Cancer
This study had 38,000 participants aged between 40-64 years old and it monitored them over a 13 year period. The regular coffee drinkers (1 or more cups a day) actually had half the risk of developing these kinds of cancers. The study also noted that the protective benefits of coffee appeared to be just as prevalent in people undertaking high risk lifestyle activities (smoking and drinking alcohol).
The researchers conclude in their article that "although cessation of alcohol consumption and cigarette smoking is currently the best known way to help reduce the risk of developing these cancers, coffee could be a preventive factor in both low-risk and high-risk populations."

Vitamin C Could Lower
Your Blood Pressure
Having high blood pressure is very serious because it makes your heart work harder than it needs to and therefore both the heart and arteries are more prone to injury. High blood pressure increases the risk of heart attacks, strokes, kidney failure, eye damage, congestive heart failure and the fatty buildups in arteries called atherosclerotic plaques. If you have high blood pressure, are obese, smoke, or have high blood cholesterol levels or diabetes, your risk of heart attack or stroke increases dramatically.
The good news is that besides using prescription drugs there are a number of things you can do to help maintain lower blood pressure. In a recent study, a link was found between high blood levels of vitamin C and lower blood pressure.
Leading author Dr. Gladys Block, of the University of California, Berkeley told Reuters Health that this "strongly suggests that vitamin C is specifically important in maintaining a healthy blood pressure"
In addition to this study there is previous research linking high plasma levels of vitamin C with lower blood pressure.
The current study involved 242 women, aged 18 - 21 years old, with normal blood pressures who were participants in the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute Growth and Health Study. The girls had entered the trial when they were aged between 8 -11 years old. Over a 10-year period, their plasma levels of ascorbic acid (vitamin C) and blood pressure were monitored.
Since these findings imply a possible association between vitamin C and blood pressure, you may want to consider making sure that your diet has plenty of vitamin C. Below are the recommendations for daily intake:
Recommended Dietary Allowance (adult male) 90 mg per day
Recommended Dietary Allowance (adult female) 75 mg per day
Upper limit of intake should not exceed 2,000 milligrams per day in men or women older than 18 years old (including pregnant or breastfeeding women).
Here are some great natural sources for it:
Oranges: 1 orange, about 3 in diameter 82.7mg
Lemons: 1 large lemon 44.5mg
Papaya: 1 cup, cubes 86.5mg
Broccoli: 1 cup, chopped, raw 81.2mg
Parsley: 1 cup, raw 79.8mg
Bell Pepper: 1 cup, chopped, raw 119.8mg
Strawberries: 1 large strawberry, fresh 10.6mg
Kale:1 cup, chopped, raw 80.4mg
Mustard Greens: 1 cup, chopped, raw 39.2mg
Cauliflower: 1 cup, raw 46.4mg
Brussels Sprouts: 1 cup, raw 74.8mg

Maintain Your Bone
Health
This is a common expression that applies to many things, but now it seems like there could be evidence that it may also apply to the extra Bone Mineral Density (BMD) people accumulate from weight bearing exercise when theyre younger.
During new research from Sweden, two groups of athletes were monitored. Both groups initially participated in weight bearing exercises but then one half continued with the exercise and the other group didnt. During the 8 years after active training ended, on average, the added BMD built up by former group of athletes had disappeared.
Based on these findings, researchers concluded that it appears that early athletic activity may not preserve bone strength later in life if the exercise is not maintained. So, if youve let your exercising slip away from you, this is a good reason to consider resuming your resistance training as nobody wants to their bone density to diminish as they age.
