5 fruits in 5 minutes

Dear Health Conscious Friend,

Get 5 Fresh Fruits in 5 Minutes

The best way to eat fruit is when it's fresh, with the skin still on and on an empty stomach. It's recommended to eat 6-9 pieces of fruit a day but the problem is, that's a lot of fruit! But here's a simple solution: by drinking fresh juices squeezed from fruits, you can have a nice glass or two of juice from 5 fruits that will essentially give you all of the same benefits.

It's a common misconception that when you blend a fruit, you lose a lot of nutrition from the fruit fibre.  The fact is that very little fruit flesh is lost in the 'juicing' process. By using a blender, you can juice a combination of fruits that will taste delicious and give you an instant jolt of pure nutrition.

Here's a couple of tips to make your fruit blends taste delicious:

Put some ice cubes in the blender - it will cool down the drink and make it more refreshing.

Add some fresh banana. You'll get the nutrients from another fruit and it'll give it a nice, thick texture, sweetening up any sourness from the other fruits.

Going Nuts Can Reduce Your Risk of Heart Attack

While it is true that nuts are somewhat high in calories, they also offer some substantial health benefits.  There have been numerous published medical studies which show that eating nuts can reduce the risk of heart disease.  In fact, in 2003, the FDA approved the following health claim for a variety of nuts:

"Scientific evidence suggests, but does not prove, that eating 1.5 oz per day of most nuts as part of a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol may reduce the risk of heart disease."

The following nuts are recommended:

- Almonds
- Hazelnuts
- Peanuts
- Pecans
- Pistachios
- Walnuts

One of the best ways to reap the benefits of eating nuts is to avoid just adding nuts to your diet and therefore increasing your caloric intake. Instead, you should replace something you currently eat, with nuts.  For example, instead of eating a bag of crisps or snacking on a slice of cake or pie, try eating some nuts. However, do be sure to limit your intake to one to two ounces of unsalted nuts per day.

Keep Your Brain Fit

Good news!  Thought your body couldn't generate new brain cells because you're middle aged or a senior?  Well, think again. It's now understood that brain cell production, called neurogenesis, can occur throughout life, even as we advance into old age.

Exercise can greatly affect how you regenerate brain cells because each time a muscle tenses and relaxes, it releases various chemicals into the body. Among these is a protein called IGF-1 that, when it travels through the bloodstream to the brain, helps organise the production of other beneficial chemicals called "neurotrophic factors."

One neurotrophic factor, BDNF, or "brain-derived neurotrophic factor," prompts brain cells to reproduce with remarkable speed. If the brain has small amounts of this chemical, it shuts itself off to new information and memory is degraded. People who exercise have higher levels of neurotrophins, resulting in a brain that's able to function with more agility.

Even mild aerobic exercise, such as walking, swimming or cycling provides a simple means to maintain brain function and promote brain plasticity by keeping the brain levels of BDNF high.
So, make sure you're getting your share of regular exercise.  It's not only good for your body, it's good for your brain!
