Dear Health Conscious Friend,
You Can Help Prevent Memory Loss
Reading and playing games can prevent memory loss
That's what a recent study said. The research studied 197 people, aged 70 - 89 years, with mild cognitive impairment or diagnosed memory loss. They were then compared to a control group, containing 1,124 people in the same age bracket with no memory problems.
All the subjects were asked about their daily activities within the past year. They were also asked to recollect memories from when they were between 50 - 65 years old.
For those who read books, played games, used computers and did crafts such as pottery or quilting in their later years, the results were impressive. They were 30 - 50% less likely to develop memory loss than people who didn't participate in these types of activities.
There were similar results for people who, in their later years, watched television for less than 7 hours a day. They were 50% less likely to develop memory loss than the 7+ hours a day group.
The study also found that people who took part in social activities and read magazines during middle age enjoyed huge benefits. Again, they were 40% less likely to develop memory loss than those who didn't participate in such activities.
So, if you'd like to greatly improve your odds of preventing or delaying memory loss, you might consider the following:
- Reduce your television viewing
- Read regularly
- Engage in a hobby or play games
- Take part in regular social activities
LOSE A STONE IN 10 DAYS!
Traditional diets such as calorie counting and eating less simply DO NOT WORK. But, the Doctor's Diet doesn't count calories, fat or the quantity of food that you eat. There is a specific group of carbohydrates that he calls 'bad carbohydrates'. These stimulate your pancreas to produce too much insulin which creates excessive energy that ultimately ends up as fatty deposits around your body. The Doctor's Diet will make you lose weight by simply avoiding these foods. For more information click here.
Foods That Can Lower Your Cholesterol
Before you go rushing off to take some cholesterol-lowering pills, you might want to see if you can lower your levels with some every day foods. Here are some that might do the trick:
Food #1
Soluble fibre has shown to reduce the absorption of cholesterol through your intestines. The gel-like form of the soluble fibre attaches itself to bile which contains cholesterol and dietary cholesterol. This allows your body to excrete the cholesterol without ever ingesting it.
Oatmeal contains soluble fibre, so eating 5-10 grams of soluble fibre a day can lower your cholesterol as much as 5%. That translates to eating one to two cups of oatmeal a day. To mix it up, you can eat oat bran or cold cereal made out of oatmeal.
Food #2
Scientific studies have demonstrated that walnuts and almonds can reduce cholesterol in significant amounts. As an added benefit they are rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids which help keep blood vessels healthy and elastic.
If you have a diet where 20% of your calories come from walnuts, your LDL cholesterol may reduce as much as 12%. For every 1200 calories you ingest daily, you only require 1/3 of a cup of walnuts to maintain that percentage level.
If you're worried about your cholesterol, give some serious thought to eating these foods.

Nutrition For Younger Looking Skin
As we all age, we do our best to keep looking young. Unfortunately, as we age, our skin dries and wrinkles. The good news is while perhaps we can't arrest this process altogether, we can certainly slow it down. This can often be done just by making sure you get the right nutrition.
Here are a few nutritional tips for keeping your skin looking young:
Vitamin A is a crucial ingredient to healthy skin and it has shown to help prevent acne and skin cancer. Just be careful not to overdose on this supplement as it can result in liver problems. Scientific studies have shown that a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, nuts, yoghurt, eggs, vegetable oils, whole grains, tea and water results in less 'photo-aging' and skin wrinkling than those who consume foods such as red meat, whole milk, butter, sugary products and potatoes.
Vitamin C is a critical ingredient that must be present in order for your skin to manufacture collagen. Collagen is a substance in the dermis (the layer of skin beneath the epidermis) that helps make the skin strong and tight. Adequate levels of vitamin C in the body will help build radiant, youthful skin and also helps with functions such as immunity, healing and cancer prevention.
Omega-3 helps prevent hardening of cells and blood vessels. When cells harden they can't pick up water or nutrition easily. This process can be the beginning of many different diseases and disorders.
So make sure you're getting plenty of these nutrients and stave off those cosmetic surgeons!
