Dear Health Conscious Friend,
A Non-Medicinal Solution to Headaches
More than 10 million people around the UK suffer regularly from migraines or other headaches, which also accounts for approximately 20% of absenteeism from the workplace.
But, there is some good news. Two newly released research reviews indicate that acupuncture can greatly relieve migraine and tension-related headaches. The reviews, published in the Cochrane Library, combined results from 32 clinical trials of using acupuncture to relieve migraine pain or chronic tension-type headaches.
Overall, 47% of patients who had acupuncture implemented into their care programme said their number of ‘headache days’ dropped by half, compared with 16% of those who stayed with standard care alone.
And in four clinical trials that compared acupuncture with drugs used to prevent migraines, acupuncture patients tended to have fewer headaches and fewer side effects.
Acupuncture has been used for more than 2,000 years in Chinese medicine to treat a wide variety of ailments. According to traditional medicine, specific acupuncture points on the skin are connected to internal pathways that conduct energy, or qi ("chee"), and stimulating these points with a fine needle promotes the healthy flow of qi.
Modern research has suggested that acupuncture may help ease pain by altering signals among nerve cells or affecting the release of various chemicals from the central nervous system.
So, if you, or someone you know, have had trouble with headaches and would like to try to control them without medications, you might want to give acupuncture a try.

There's now proof that simple exercise actually increases brain capacity as we age. In a recent Canadian study of female subjects over the age of 65, those that took part in regular aerobic exercise had cognitive function 10% higher than those that didn’t. As an added bonus, the women had lower blood pressure. The findings were published in the journal, Neurobiology of Aging.
In fact, the lead author of the study stated, "being sedentary is now considered a risk factor for stroke and dementia. This study proves for the first time that people who are fit have better blood flow to their brain. Our findings also show that better blood flow translates into improved cognition”.
If you aren't doing regular cardiovascular exercise, you might want to give strong consideration to starting a regular exercise program.

Yo Yo Weight Loss No Good
Perhaps you're someone who puts on a few pounds and then loses them... over and over again? If not, you probably know someone who does this. Well, new research indicates that this kind of weight fluctuation is not good for your health.
From a review in the International Journal of Obesity, Swiss researchers of this evidence noted an association between weight fluctuations and cardiovascular disease and related fatalities. Researchers report that "there is increasing evidence that weight cycling may lead to cardiovascular and metabolic disorders, such as hypertension and diabetes".
The risk of complications as a result of weight cycling seems greater in people with normal weight or those who are slightly overweight than it does in obese people. Weight cycling can refer to a small weight loss and regain of 5 to 10 pounds, or a larger cycle of 50 pounds or more.
Nevertheless, medical professionals strongly note that you shouldn’t let a fear of weight cycling stop you from trying to lose some pounds if you are overweight, as the benefits far exceed the risks. But, if you are one of those people who tend to fluctuate, this research gives you an added reason to simply try and keep the weight off permanently.
