More than two million people in the UK have been diagnosed with diabetes. It's estimated that a further 750,000 have the condition without being aware of it. In fact an estimate 3 out of every hundred people over the age of 40 will contract this disease.

But, there is good news. Recent studies have shown that nutrition and exercise programmes can decrease the development of diabetes in high-risk groups by as much as 71%.

First, let me give you a breakdown of the three main categories of diabetes:

Type I diabetes is a very serious and non-preventable condition where the patient needs a daily dose of insulin since the pancreas does not produce it at all or in enough quantities.

Type II diabetes usually occurs in older or obese people who do not have to have a family history of diabetes. 80% of Type II diabetics are overweight

Type III diabetes is gestational diabetes which occurs in pregnant women.

What You Can Do To Prevent Diabetes

Various treatments to lower blood pressure and lower cholesterol will help reduce the risk of getting Type II diabetes. However, the single most important way to reduce the risk of Type II diabetes is to give careful attention to a balanced diet and regular exercise program.

In fact a recent three year study of 3,234 subjects that were in pre-diabetic state had the following results:

One group in the experiment followed a low-fat diet and they exercised moderately.

A second group took metformin (brand name Glucophage, and currently in use to treat diabetes) twice daily. A third group took placebo pills.

Almost 30% of the placebo group developed diabetes during the study. About 22% of those taking metformin did. But, the dramatic results came from the life-style-change group, where only 14% developed diabetes. That's a 58% reduction!

The effect was even greater in those aged over 60. The lifestyle change group increased their intake of fruits and vegetables and decreased fat. They cut down on sweets, but didn't have to give them up entirely.

So, if you're over 45 and/or in a high risk group for diabetes, you might want to give serious consideration to making some very modest changes to your lifestyle which will dramatically reduce your chances of contracting this very serious disease.

A Natural Way to Reduce the Risk of Heart Disease

There are many different factors that medical experts associate with a higher risk of heart disease. Some of them you're probably aware of such as high cholesterol but there is another one that you may not know about...

There is an amino acid in your blood called homocysteine. Medical studies have shown that too much homocysteine in the blood is related to a higher risk of heart disease and stroke.

Additionally, there is other evidence that suggests that homocysteine may damage the inner lining of arteries and promoting blood clots.

The good news is that there is a simple vitamin that is reported to greatly reduce this risk. Several studies have found that higher blood levels of B vitamins are related, at least partly, to lower concentrations of homocysteine. Other recent evidence shows that low blood levels of folic acid are linked with a higher risk of fatal coronary heart disease and stroke.

In fact, studies have shown that high levels of homocysteine can be normalised by getting enough of the vitamins B6 and B12, as well as folic acid, and betaine. A healthy individual with adequate levels of the above mentioned nutrients will metabolise the amino acid methionine to a harmless amino acid cysteine which will protect against arterial damage.

You can get folic acid through diet from foods such as green, leafy vegetables and grain products fortified with folic acid. In addition, you can get these vitamin B nutrients from over the counter vitamins. With so much evidence pointing to the importance of these nutrients - capacity to reduce a major cardiovascular risk that doesn't get the same press as cholesterol, I suggest you consider adding these to your diet.
